Top 5 Crossfit Gyms in Hawaii

Here's what you need to know...
  • CrossFit is a popular exercise regime sweeping the nation
  • There is evidence showing CrossFit exercise burns more calories faster than other more traditional forms of exercise
  • If you are planning a vacation, be sure to also plan for working out while on vacation
  • Hawaii has a wide selection of CrossFit gyms to choose from if you are vacationing there

CrossFit is a fairly new concept to working out. These group classes are high-intensity and focus on the theory that more intense exercise over a shorter period of time is more effective than other methods. In fact, CrossFit is morphing into its own culture with specific diets and high energy team atmospheres.

Many former professional athletes and fitness fanatics are a part of this movement.

CrossFit trainers teach their athletes that discomfort should be accepted and to push their bodies to the limit in order to obtain the maximum benefit and impact of the workout. CrossFit also teaches that your body should be prepared for the unknown.

Common Crossfit Workout Moves

CrossFit workouts are known as WODs or the Workout of the Day. A WOD involves several strength training and heart-pounding exercises such as:

  • Burpees – This common, yet dreaded move involves bending down, planting your hands on the ground, kicking back into a plank, and performing a push-up. Then the legs are brought back in and you jump up and clap your hands overhead.
  • Double Under – This exercise involves using a jump rope, yet passing it under your feet twice during only a single jump. It might sound easy but try doing multiples in a row.
  • Pistol – This move is also known as single leg squats. Pistols only use half of the legs but are double the effort of a regular leg squat.

Why Crossfit?

You may be wondering why such a difficult and challenging exercise program has such a following. Here’s why:

  • Faster physical results – Studies have shown that it takes 45 minutes of moderate exercise on a stationary bike to burn the same number of calories that 20-minute high-intensity CrossFit workouts can burn.
  • Social opportunities – CrossFitters support each other in classes of around 12-20. There is a strong camaraderie and group atmosphere which helps encourage participants and spurs them on to do their best.
  • Sacrificing energy – Gone are the days of sacrificing energy to get a meal, however, there is a primal need for some people to burn off energy in a ritualistic way. CrossFit helps accomplish that.

Finding a Gym while Traveling

AdobeStock_69267111-1600x1600

Vacations, whether short or long, help us to get away from the stress and busyness of everyday life. They are an important piece of self-care. However, it is still important to work out while on vacation.

Not doing so can cause you to lose progress you have made.

Skipping workouts while on vacation can also increase your stress, create problems with sleep, and make it more difficult to get back into your workout routine once you return from your vacation.

Making the commitment to working out while on vacation takes some planning. Find out where the local CrossFit gyms are, what prices they charge for drop-ins, and what their schedule is prior to going on your trip to help increase the chances of you getting your needed workouts in.

Plan them into your daily activities. If you fail to plan ahead, you will be more likely to skip your workouts.

Essential Items to Bring

As with any CrossFit class, it pays to come prepared. If you are traveling to Hawaii and plan on dropping into a CrossFit facility for a workout or two, plan on bringing these essentials:

  • A jump rope – If possible, purchase a customized jump rope. These are available for around $10-$60. You will get a better work out when you have one that fits you specifically. These are also great for traveling and trying to fit workouts in on your own.
  • Athletic tape – This versatile tool is important to keep with you. It can be used to protect skin tears from pull-ups, decrease pain and discomfort during overhead barbell exercises, or event to add an extra layer of wrist support for your workout.
  • Water bottle – Although most, if not all, CrossFit locations will have water available, it is more convenient and more sanitary to carry your own water bottle. It also makes it easier to add ice or flavor to your water if you have a water bottle.
  • Sunscreen – Due to Hawaii’s amazing weather, many workouts can be performed outside. Be prepared to protect your skin with a bottle of sunscreen when coming in for a CrossFit workout.
  • Hat – In addition to sunscreen, you should also bring a hat. As an added bonus, they can hide your bad hair day.
  • Lifting shoes – Weight lifting shoes provide the support and range of motion needed when lifting. They feature a hard heel that is raised which gives you more stability when exiting a squat.
  • Running shoes – No matter what style of running shoe works for you, don’t forget to bring them along in case your workout features a long run.
  • CrossFit shoes – Leave room in your bag for CrossFit shoes that allow you to perform many exercises while only using one shoe. Cross trainer shoes are stable with flat soles, stiff yet flexible, as well as breathable.
  • A good attitude – Last, but not least, do not forget your good attitude. Coming to a CrossFit class should be a positive experience, no matter where you go. Bringing your best attitude with you will set you up for success in your workout.
